Participation in this challenge and the workship will give insight into the definition of sustainable designt, its types and principles, aims and application in entrepreneurship. Additionally, the participants will gather a large set of skills and knowledge about the newest tendencies in sustainable design in the UK as well as the world, various case studies from the UK sustainable design enterprises and information on strategies and principles of sustainable desight and how to apply these to small and medium sized enterprises.

The main topics and speakers:

“Sustainability: Product Design and De-materialisation”
Guy Robinson, director of sustainable product design consultancy Sprout Design, will introduce the concept of sustainability and how it has changed over the course of time. He will talk about Sprout Design’s role and experience in sustainable innovation. You will find out about the concept of de-materialisation illustrated with examples and strategies you could try yourself.

“Redefining ‘Good Design’ in an unsustainable age“
Dr.Jonathan Chapman, sustainable design theorist, consultant and educator, argues that the sustainability crisis is a crisis of behaviour, and not one simply of energy and materials alone, as is often assumed. Chapman maps a deeper engagement with the sustainability agenda – grappling with the knotty problems of design, materiality, human behaviour and sustainability to provide timely reassessments of ethics and design in an age of over-consumption.

“Welsh story“
Simon O’Rafferty is the head of research at the Ecodesign Centre in Wales, one of a handful of countries that has sustainable development built into its constitution. He is also the co-founder of social design network thinkARK. Simon will discuss the role of designers in sustainability. He will share personal insights and perspectives on the issues facing the design and manufacturing industry. He will support these insights by sharing examples of why and how small design-led companies are responding to the challenges of sustainability.
